I am thrilled to share my story with you and why I am a believer in structural integration. I hope that this story provides hope and inspiration to you as it did for me. As a 16 year old, I was a 3 sport athlete. I excelled at volleyball, basketball, and baseball however during everyday life my functionality was nothing short of debilitating. I recall a time during my junior year of high school at which I was participating in an internship program at a physical therapy clinic. I remembered how difficult it was for me to stand for a period of time without experiencing leg pain. I thought to myself, this is not normal. I noticed that there was a strong “tight” feeling in the back of my legs that would not dissipate unless I sat down. I also was unable to move fluidly or stretch without a strong increase in pain. It was at that time, my parents looked into the bodywork known as Structural Integration.
I participated in a series of sessions with an SI practitioner. Photos were taken prior to beginning the sessions to gage a baseline of my posture. After the series, the photos told a different story. My body had remarkably changed. Not only did I look longer and more symmetrical, I felt the effects of the work on my body throughout daily function. I was now able to move more fluidly and stand without tension in my body. I no longer had to sit down after 10 minutes of standing, nor did I feel pain with stretching. I was marvelled at the changes in my body. At that time I new this therapy was the real deal! I completed my high school career and received multiple baseball scholarships at the Junior College and NCAA Division II levels. Some of my success at the collegiate level I attribute to the bodywork received years earlier. Without that work, I have many doubts as to whether my collegiate career would have been as healthy and productive as it was.
Following my collegiate experience I began work as a physical therapist assistant in 2007. My passion and desire has been to improve the functional wellness of those who also shared in my experience with chronic pain conditions. As I continued to work in physical therapy, I found that many clients were benefiting from hands on manipulation that I once learned in my degree. At that time I chose to further and fine tune that education by travelling to Maine for a certification in Structural Integration. Seeing clients change in front of my eyes and watching as they were able to restore their movement and function gave me the greatest joy and appreciation for this work.
Since beginning Paradigm Structural Integration full time in 2015, I have treated many clients within the community who struggle daily from chronic pain conditions that don’t seem to improve with medication or selected therapy’s. These are the clients that I want to say, “There is hope!” There is another opportunity out there and it is in the form of Structural Integration. On this website, I encourage you to read the “What”, “Why”, and “How”, along with frequently asked questions and of course testimonials of those who share in similar experiences as you and I. I hope that this will encourage you or someone you know to seek care for chronic pain condition(s) so that you can benefit in function, movement, efficiency, and balance within the body you live. This is the only body you have, care for it and commit to improving with Paradigm Structural Integration.
Sincerely,
Tim Hinchliffe
